THE FLAVORS

A major part of Kerala’s culture revolves around food. If one were to sum up the Keralite diet in two words, those would be rice and curry, but one should not be fooled to think that this simplicity is synonymous with monotony.

Every grain of rice has a unique character and flavor, from Kerala rice to Ghee rice. Every spoonful of steaming hot curry is seasoned well, with spices ranging from turmeric, cumin and chili to mace, cardamom and saffron. The Indian spices give life to the cuisine; a splash of coconut milk or oil here, trimmings of fresh ginger and garlic, and herbs and greens everywhere.

An assortment of flavors, a plethora of colors. These are the traditional local sweets, one for every taste. Carts are hung with shimmering packets of crisps, rows of biscuits and snacks and, not to fear, there are also fruit stands around. You will not go hungry whatever your dietary limits. Coconuts, mangoes, papayas, oranges, melons, grapes and bananas comprise only some of the budget friendly choices one has in Kerala.
